I SPY: A Darling!

While pillaging through some images of Stella McCartney's FABULOUS Spring 2011 Presentation, And after perusing through a few shots of Filipa Fino and Anna and Graydon Carter, I spotted a rare, leather-clad/mystical creature among all the bleh pastels and flyaway hair -- and who could that be??? It was none other than Darian Darling!

Can You Spot Her?

"Shit! Am I not supposed to wear leather to a Stella McCartney fashion show? What's rock'N roll without leather??" - Via Twitter

"Semi Precious Weapons Bring 'Dirty, Filthy' Rock to Lady Gaga Tour"

Semi Precious Weapons' Justin Tranter"It's no secret that New York rockers Semi Precious Weapons have been friends with Lady Gaga for years. The celebrated pop star was a fan of the band, which eventually led to their meeting. "We heard about her through friends of friends: there was this girl named Gaga who loves the band and puts on a really great show," SPW frontman Justin Tranter tells Spinner. "And we've been one of her favorite bands for three or four years now and that's how we became friends."

Years ago, Gaga opened for Semi Precious Weapons; now, she's giving them the same chance on her sold-out "Monster Ball" tour. The pairing might seem odd to some, but both acts come from the same New York City scene and share a love for boldness and flair. On 'Semi Precious Weapons,' the opening track to their rocking new album, 'You Love You,' Tranter declares for the world, "I can't pay my rent, but I'm f---ing goregous." It's the kind of style and brashness one can see Gaga loving, but there is one big difference between the two acts: Where Gaga is an unquestioned pop star, SPW proudly play what they call "f---ing filthy" rock. It's loud, in-your-face, guitar-laden music that combines their love for early
Guns N' Roses with the energy and swagger of the New York Dolls.

Tranter says that out on the road, there is some initial surprise among Gaga's followers. "I can see on some of the fans' faces, it's just like full-on confusion. They're waiting for the backing tracks to kick in, they're waiting for our dancers to get onstage," he says. "But obviously it's not gonna happen. Every sound you hear is made by the four of us and it's really f---ing loud."

Still, he believes that after the shock wears off, fans appreciate the match. "Some fans, it takes a minute but they end up really liking it. It's kind of the genius and beauty of Gaga," he says. "Her fans are like, 'Of course this is what Gaga did. Of course she said 'F--- everybody, I'm bringing a rock band on the road.'"

So, for a band that has a song called 'Sticky in Champagne' and admittedly loves the glamorous life, are they reaping the benefits of being on the road with music's biggest star at the moment? "Definitely not," Tranter says, laughing. "We're still very, very, very broke." But they are getting some perks. "If you walk into the right club after you perform for 10,000 people, you can figure some things out," he says. "Lots of free drinks and lots of free food."

GayCalgary Interviews Justin Tranter of Semi Precious Weapons

Semi Precious Weapons miss when sex – the dirty come-ons, reckless rebellion and, of course, groin grabbing – was as important to rock as the music itself. So they’re bringing it back.

As those who’ve beheld Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball spectacular know, they’re taking this mission seriously – in pantyhose or whatever other girly garb singer Justin Tranter’s feeling, the New York foursome make every glam-rock song, like the brazen, buzzed-about “Magnetic Baby,” a climax.

As the modern priestess of pop rolls out another leg of the tour this summer, Semi Precious Weapons – who’s dropping their proper debut You Love You on June 22 – will wield their sex shenanigans across the world. Before heading out again, we caught up with Tranter to talk about being on tour with Gaga, how he sees himself sexually and his own precious weapon (or lack thereof).

GayCalgary: Why is sex an important part of rock ‘n’ roll?

Justin: Because the whole reason rock ‘n’ roll became something different than pop music – and why rock ‘n’ roll became something different than every other genre out there – was that it was dangerous and rebellious and extremely sexual. Sex needs to exist in rock ‘n’ roll always, or it shouldn’t be called... Read More Here

Semi Precious Weapons to Perform on David Letterman

Just before their album hits U.S. Stores on the 29th, Semi Precious Weapons will be taping their performance for CBS' Late Night with David Letterman.   Our boys confirmed this last night on JBTV saying that their performance will be taped on the 24th but no word yet on when the show will actually air.

We honestly can't wait for this performance, because this is a REALLLY big deal.  It's about time America was exposed to some raw, vulgar, and fabulous rock - and we KNOW our boys are going to do amazing.

Also, if you were unable to catch their performance/interview on JBTV visit www.jbtvonline.com and watch their latest episode.  You have to sit through Treaty of Paris and Metric but it's totally worth it!  Check out iTunes later for a podcast download!
