"Gaga’s Glam Boys: Semi-Precious Weapons" A Review
“I can’t pay the rent, but I’m fuckin’ gorgeous.” That lines explodes on the opening, self-titled track of the Semi-Precious Weapons’ debut LP, You Love You. And it’s certainly not the last time a line belted by sparkly extra-terrestrial singer Justin Tranter will slap you in the face, nor the last reminding you just how gorgeous he is.
In a land of indie dance and electronic, NYC’s Weapons have resurfaced the Bowie glam rock era with a slightly grungier cross-dressing style, mixing glitter and makeup with Converse and flannel in a sort of ‘street glam’ that’s enough to stand out, yet not too much to brand them as all-shtick.
On the “Monster Ball” tour with Lady Gaga—the album’s executive producer as well as a fellow NYC rock n’ roller—the Weapons are thrilled with their progress this year, says Tranter: “We spent three years driving ourselves around in a murder van to play bars EVERYWHERE, I mean we even played a sports bar in Waterloo, Iowa. Now in the last three months we have made an incredible record that we are proud of, and are on a tour bus playing arenas all over the world with Ms. GaGa! Hard work and magic.”
The magic of the Weapons is nottheir music per se, but in knowing what a beautiful mess they are. For ears unfamiliar with Bowie’s “Major Tom” or, at least, the film soundtrack for Velvet Goldmine, the Weapons may sound like another Jet or The Hives, with heavy guitar and tambourine. Basically, rockin’ songs like “Magnetic Baby” and the beautifully-glam ballad “Leave Your Pretty to Me” may be taken differently if there’s no accompanying image of Tranter working the stage like Marilyn Manson on the other side of the looking glass. –By Julia Dodge
With their modernized New York Dolls look, the Weapons’ sing about diamonds and champagne, being glamorous and adored, and you’ve got to love them for their choice lines: “Sometimes I cry because it makes my eyes look bluer/Sometimes I bleed because red is a good color for me.” Fuckin’ poetry.
You Love You is out on June 22. The Semi-Precious Weapons stop by the HP Pavilion in San Jose on Lady Gaga’s “Monster Ball” tour August 16 & 17.

You Love You: An Album Review
"The terms “raw” and “glam” are seldom used to describe the same band, but they suit New York’s queer-core Semi Precious Weapons quite well.
The band’s latest release, You Love You, is peppered by self-indulgent lyricism and war cries by frontman Justin Tranter.
“It’s not my fault I look better in her party dress, it’s not my fault that you left your slutty girlfriend, it’s not my fault this is how my momma made me, I’ve been magnetic since I was a baby,” sings Tranter on “Magnetic Baby”.
This band made a splash with the free release of 2008’s We Love You, later released on Razor and Tie Records. The Internet release was made possible via lead singer Tranter’s successful jewelry line, sold at Barney’s and early Semi Precious Weapons shows, which consisted of three years playing any bar that would have this dirty band rock its dance floors.
One can imagine that the title of the record, the band’s first with major label Geffen, comes from the fact that Semi Precious Weapons are making music for a cause greater than the band itself — rock ‘n’ roll. Whether the song playing is the eponymous single or the slow-jam love song that closes the record, “Look at Me”, the same raw energy that makes this band a must-see shines through. That energy is the special ingredient that separates this brand of music from its peers, creating a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts. The band is able to do so much with the four standard instruments that rock bands are known for, at times making it seem as if Semi Precious Weapons make up a rock ‘n’ roll orchestra.
The quartet of Berklee School of Music graduates has been opening for Lady Gaga on The Monster Ball Tour, thrusting its literal translation of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll upon 18,000 people every night.
Transitioning from college in Boston has created a unique opportunity for the band to separate itself from the New York hipster scene.
“We got to New York and it was nothing but girls pretending to be in ‘Sex and the City’ and dudes schwerking v-necks, insisting they don’t love The Strokes,” Tranter said recently. “So our bitch asses decided to stop complaining about New York’s hipster plague and start the filthy party band we always wanted to see.”
The band’s success is no accident, with Tranter having a degree in songwriting and drummer Dan Crean earning a degree in classical composition from the aforementioned prestigious university. In addition to this pair, Cole Whittle and Stevy Pyne are no slouches, having Berklee degrees themselves. The resulting mixture has created a local buzz so strong that readers of the Village Voice tabbed Semi Precious Weapons as the “Best Band in New York” last year. The New York-based quartet channels the 1970’s glam-rock era David Bowie and The New York Dolls and mix in the grit of garage bands like The Hives to create a sound that takes fun and filth “very, very seriously”.
With this latest release, no lyric seems more appropriate than “rock ‘n’ roll never looked so beautiful” and soon enough, this band will be able to pay the rent, and the music remains “fucking gorgeous.” (4.0/5.0)
Fans can purchase the album online via iTunes. The album is due out June 29 in the U.S."

Semi Precious Weapons Talk Isle of Wight
Lady Gaga’s special guests on her Monster Ball Tour, the Semi Precious Weapons, played the Big Top today and lead singer Justin Tranter was in typical over the top dress mode.
“We don’t believe in festival wardrobe, we believe in life wardrobe,” pouted 6ft Justin who was dressed in a fashionable nude shade – white and nude fishnet tights, a white t shirt barely covering his modesty and large eyelet adorned leather jacket, with his trademark six inch heels.
“I wore six inch green heels yesterday too. A colour to match the mud,” said Justin.
“Jay Z was amazing – we danced the whole time. And we saw Marina and the Diamonds and Florence and the Machine.”
The band also played in the big top on Thursday evening for those lucky enough to be camping.
“John Giddings saw us open for Gaga at the O2 and asked us if we’d play his festival. We said yes but we didn’t even know where his festival was,” said Justin.
“Our manager came and told us “Now you’re playing the IW Festival twice”,” he laughed.
“This is our first festival and it’s been amazing. There’s a lot more people who know who we are than we thought. It was insane – there were so many people who knew our words and the album isn’t even out yet.
“We’ve had a great time. We’ve got to fly back to the US tomorrow to play Nylon Party in LA.
“We’re the new rat pack,” claimed Justin. “All rock bands take themselves so seriously but we’re having a great time.”
The Weapons are all Berklee School of Music graduates. “Our drummer (Dan Crean) has a degree in classical composition, which is a bit bizarre,” said Justin.
“Lady Gaga has been a huge fan of ours for four years. She’s so fun and exciting and secretly a very good musician.”
In 2008 Justin caused a stir when Kate Moss attended their gig at London’s Death Disco Club and danced with the outrageous blond bisexual singer.
